Minimally invasive treatment methods

Medicine is constantly evolving, and this is particularly true for foot surgery, especially surgical procedures. In recent years, the so-called keyhole technique (minimally invasive surgery, MIS) has become established. This method revolutionises conventional procedures by dispensing with large skin incisions and instead operating through tiny incisions just a few millimetres long.

Evolution of minimally invasive surgery

The keyhole technique originated in other medical specialities, such as knee or shoulder surgery, and quickly became established in foot surgery as well. For some operations, such as ankle arthroplasty or fusion surgery, the classic ‘open’ surgical technique remains the standard. However, for many other procedures, particularly on the Forefoot and calcaneus, the MIS technique has now become fully established. Studies show that the results of minimally invasive treatment methods are at least as good as those of open incision techniques.

Application and advantages of MIS technology

The MIS technique is used in particular for operations on the forefoot and heel bone. It is ideal for the treatment of all toe deformities such as Hallux valgus and hammertoes. One cosmetic advantage of the keyhole technique is the minimal scarring caused by the small incisions. However, the main advantage lies in the improved healing, as the blood supply to the bone and surrounding tissue is hardly disturbed. This creates ideal conditions for undisturbed healing and significantly reduces post-operative pain.

Studies show that the keyhole technique leads to considerably less pain and problems in the first three months after the operation than the open method. In the long term, both procedures show equally good results, but the initial healing process is significantly more comfortable for the patient with the MIS technique.

Another advantage of minimally invasive surgery is that there is no need for plates or screws. The operated foot can bear weight immediately after the procedure without the need for crutches. This is made possible by a special bandage shoe that supports and protects the foot while healing progresses.

Expertise und Innovation

Dr. Hochheuser is an internationally recognised specialist in the field of minimally invasive foot surgery. This year, he published a new standard work on minimally invasive foot surgery, which is regarded as an authoritative reference in the medical world. His expertise and continuous innovations have contributed to making the keyhole technique a favoured method in foot surgery today.

Come and see the specialist!

Minimally invasive foot surgery (MIS) represents a significant advance in the treatment of foot and toe deformities. By avoiding large incisions and using a minimally invasive approach, the chances of recovery are improved and post-operative pain is reduced. The MIS technique not only offers aesthetic benefits, but also functional and clinical advantages that have been confirmed by numerous studies. Thanks to the expertise of Dr Hochheuser, a leading specialist in this field, patients can benefit from the latest and best treatment methods available today.
